“Why offer mortgage protection at all?”
Because you believe every mortgage should be protected.
That statement may seem pretty strong … maybe even a bit melodramatic. But when you think about it, the alternative is not really an option. If a mortgage is unprotected, your client will lose his or her home if a key bread-winner dies. And we know that you never want to see that happen.
We understand that not everybody needs Mortage Protection Plan. Some people will have alternative forms of protection. But, as a mortgage broker, it is not your job to help people evaluate their protection options. It is only your job to make sure they don’t turn a blind eye to the need, and they have an opportunity to do something about it.
What does that mean in practice? Simply advise your client to protect their mortgage (in some way, shape or form) and offer Mortgage Protection Plan as an immediate way to do that. And make sure there is adequate documentation of your client’s decision. It shouldn’t take you more than a couple of extra minutes on each deal.
